Aloha!

You’ll be saying Mahalo at the end of your meal here!

The Aloha Grill has been at their location on Harry Wurzbach outside the gates of Fort Sam Houston for almost 6 months now.

We’ve been eating at Aloha since they served lunches on Fridays at their old location in the Aloha flower shop on Austin Hwy. Over there, it was a leisurely lunch and had a dedicated following. Since moving to their new location, and being full time restaurateurs, you can now enjoy a quick fix of Hawaiian sunshine any day of the week. The menu has expanded and thankfully, the food is still fabulous.

The Aloha grill is one of the few places that has drinks made with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Whether you want a can of soda from Hawaii, or their local made sweet tea made with raw sugar, it’s all good. I love the sweet tea. They never let your glass get empty and the raw sugar adds a depth of flavour unlike anything else.

This week when my husband and I went in, I ordered the Huli Huli chicken. He got the chicken curry and rice.

Aloha Curry

The food came out in less than 5 minutes! The Huli Huli chicken was so buttery tender, a toothless person could have eaten it. It came with sticky rice, mac salad, which is like a cross between a potato salad and mac salad, but super delicious, and then a choice of green beans or coconut cream corn. I got the corn.

The Curry is like a Japanese Curry. Full of flavour, but not spicy like an Indian curry. It sits on top of a bed of rice. Both meals were huge and we needed to go boxes. We swapped our leftovers for dinner!

The staff are super friendly. If you’ve ever seen the Hawaiian booth at the Texas Folklife Festival, you’ll probably recognize the staff when you walk in to The Aloha Grill. They have the Shave Ice booth and do the Hawaiian dancing. Everyone at The Aloha Grill has that Aloha spirit and I always walk out feeling like I’ve had a mini Hawaiian vacation.

Being close to the base at Fort Sam Houston, it’s a perfect spot for a quick lunch for military folk. Many of them have been stationed in Hawaii and love getting the authentic cuisine of the Islands. Hubby and I keep meaning to go check out the dinner service. They have a larger menu for dinner and once a month they put on a Luau. Definitely one to go check out.

So if you’re looking for a taste of the Islands, go check out The Aloha Grill.

A birthday celebration the other night brought us to Auden’s Kitchen. The comfort food here brings a smile to my face, reminding me of the comfort food from my small hometown but upped a notch with fresh touches. My meal started with the mixed green salad which was big enough to split with my husband. The roasted olive vinaigrette was a nice change to the usually too sweet vinaigrettes offered elsewhere. As an entrée, I opted for the Beef Short Ribs braised in Blanco stout. I found the ribs falling off the bone tender and finger licking good. The skin-on mashers and bacon apple sauerkraut were the perfect accompaniment for the hardy gravy. My husband couldn’t resist the buttermilk fried chicken and wasn’t disappointed. The chicken was crunchy and perfectly spiced on the outside, but wonderfully moist on the inside. And it was a plate fit for a large appetite. The fresh green beans, mashers and white gravy were a perfect compliment for the chicken. Just like Mom would cook for Sunday dinner.

We decided dessert was definitely a must at Auden’s. Who wouldn’t be tempted in trying a comfort dessert, right? My husband decided on the Baklava Cheesecake. The nut and honey crust and topping were a nice touch for the creamy cheesecake. Not sticky sweet or fruity for a change of pace. However my choice for dessert was the most luscious lemon pie I have had in many years. I have spent years comparing a certain lemon pie from my childhood to lemon pies all over the world. I have to tell you Auden’s Kitchen lemon pie is the pie of my dreams. A perfect flaky crust, a tart/sweet melt in your mouth, to die for filling and the perfect real, made from scratch meringue to top it all off. If you don’t get to Auden’s Kitchen for anything else, go for a slice of lemon pie. However I bet you can’t resist many of the other offerings on their menu.

Auden’s Kitchen is open for lunch and dinner as well as Sunday Brunch and they offer take away. They also offer an extensive wine and beer selection.

Last night, a group of us went to the Alamo Drafthouse Theater in San Antonio. We all lived on different sides of town and we thought it would be good central location, as well as the fact that it was supposed to be very adult friendly, with no unsupervised kids running around. We were with a Childfree meetup group, so that was also an important consideration. Just an FYI. they have mother and baby day on Tuesday and kids can go the rest of the week, they just have to be supervised by an adult.

Walking in, there was indeed a large selection of beers on tap. We headed straight to the theatre to watch Robin Hood. Under each row, there was menus and a row of lights to read them by. To place your order, you have to put a piece of paper up like a flag for the waiter to see.

Now, I’m going to admit that most of what happens next is probably only going to affect short people. I’m only 4’11″ so it may be unique to us little people. However, the chairs are not comfortable for little people. They’re like racing car seats for extremely tall people. I wasn’t comfortable the entire movie. When I put my “flag” up, I couldn’t see the movie screen. Any time a waiter came to check on us, I couldn’t see the screen.

Now back to normal people. The lights under the bench in front of us never dim. You can’t turn them off. I had a sweater with me that I had to use to cover them, as they were really irritating my husband. One of my tall friends sat with her legs crossed in such a fashion to cover them. But, the light from ALL the lights together kinda lit up the whole room, so it wasn’t a nice dark movie theatre.

Food came out in random order. Granted, there were 8 of us, and we all ordered on separate checks. However, since my husband and I ordered at the same time on the same ticket, you’d think the meals would come out at relatively the same time. No. He got his meal, finished it and then we had to inquire about mine. It came about 20 mins after that. Everyone’s drinks came out sporadically. Which also meant there was a constant procession of wait staff bobbing around in front of us, asking who had ordered what.

We live over by the Rialto theater at 410 and 35 on the NE side. They’ve being doing the dinner movie thing for several years now. I guess a lot of people don’t know it’s there, or they don’t want to go to that side of town. However, I’d say the Rialto is WAY better than the yuppie Alamo Drafthouse.

I won’t be going back to the Alamo Drafthouse. It wasn’t comfortable, the lighting sucked and the constant procession of staff walking through was distracting.

In My Opinion By Robert McGuire:
That Taco Shop in San Antonio, TX – That Taco Shop is an American Taco-ria by Robert Dominguez which is a little bit different type of Mexican or Tex-Mex food that you’re used to. It’s meant to be a bit more bold, fresh, and most important healthy. That Taco Shop has people that work there whom are passionate about the food and their customers. Come try a taste and they’d love to hear your feedback here at That Taco Shop, where they want to achieve world taco domination!

I’ve truly given That Taco Shop a try and run for their money or tacos if you will, as I went there 3 times in one week. Yeah, I’m pretty crazy and I’ve found some great items on their menu that I really like. Although it’s a small place in the corner of a shopping center, they are large on flavor and service. So come on by and there’s plenty of parking for everyone.

I really like the FREE chips and salsa bar that they have. My favorite tacos or menu items are the bacon & egg tacos and of course the BBQ pork torta!!! Yeah, I know what you’re thinking a damn sandwich at a taco place? Yes and it is full of flavor, as it comes with pork carnitas flavored with their own tequila BBQ sauce and then topped with poblano peppers, onions, and their spice slaw. It is umm umm good!!! This is a recommended item by me, so be sure to let them know I sent you

Another dish I always have to try at any taco shop is their fish tacos. It pains me to report, but the time I went these tacos seemed a bit bland and without the contrasting flavors that you would normally have with the fish, slaw, and it all just tasted like the dressing. It was way too overwhelming and I’ve let them know about this and hope to give this dish another try.

Well, what more can I tell you, except to come and try the place for yourself. Overall this place is very affordable and you just can’t beat that.

In My Opinion:
Lord’s Kitchen in San Antonio, TX – Lord’s Kitchen is a San Antonio institution and a must try burger joint at least one time. Our buddy Vid recommended us to go try this place for lunch. It’s a bit hard to find and out of the way from our office, but glad to have tried it. It’s your truly hole-in-the-wall type of place but it has a unique feel to it. As you enter Lord’s Kitchen it’s like a time capsule from the 1950′s and it’s got that rare Americana feel, which seems to be lost now-a-days to all the chain burger joints.

The drinks are served in Texas sized cups and that should have been a preview of things to come The burgers reminded me of a time growing up from a small mom & pop convenience store used to cook up. I got the 1/2 lb. cheeseburger and it was pretty big with a good helping of fries. The burgers was pretty good, I like how the meat had the right amount of crispyness yet still very tender and juicy within. Overall the food is a bit on the greasy side, and the fries was about average. Overall this place is very affordable and you just can’t beat that.

In My Opinion By JFraser:
The Bagel Factory in San Antonio, TX – Having moved from Long Island to San Antonio four years ago, one of the only things that I was missing was a REAL NY BAGEL (when I first moved here, I was told to forget about bagels and start eating breakfast tacos). Well , no more compromises for me. These bagels are steamed, not baked and considering the difference in water, they are just what I remember. I found the Bagel Factory products to be fresh, tasty and crispsy/chewey exactly where they are supposed to be. They also sell a variety of breakfasts and lunches, all of course, built around their bagels. They aren’t at the point yet where they sell “nova” (lox) or white fish salad by weight (like a 1/4 pound) but hopefully they’ll get there. In the meantime, the Bagel Factory has replaced all other pseudo-bagel providers around town. I hope that they stay in business (and also expand their menu).
