At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.
You will come out of this movie never wanting to touch your face again. Seriously! This movie shows how quickly and easily a virus can go pandemic. I thought it was a good movie overall, but it left a few unanswered questions.

If you are looking for a place to have dinner and watch a movie, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema may be just the place for you. Not only do they offer hot food, they also offer snacks, beer and drinks. And they have servers bring the food and drinks to you while you watch the movie.

They have both new release movies as well as alternative movies for you to choose from and they don’t play ads before your movie starts. A real plus for me about this cinema is they have a very strict no cell phone and talking during the movie policy.

It is no wonder Entertainment Weekly named the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema “the best theater in America”.

This place is a great idea.

Their are several locations in town.

We went to the Cameo Theatre this past weekend to see Red, White and Tuna, the hilarious comedy set in Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas. The scene was set on the 4th of July Tuna High School Class Reunion with humor most of us here in Texas will recognize. Who of us hasn’t attended a High School reunion?

It was very interesting how two actors could play19 different characters, including men, women and children just by making costume changes. With each change, they totally became the character. I feel like I knew most of the characters personally.

Red, White and Tuna runs through September 5.

A Real Flicks and Food experience

The Rialto Cinema Bar and Grill, on the NE side at Loop 410 and IH 35 is one of the original dinner and a movie experiences in San Antonio.

Long before the Alamo Drafthouse came to town, the Rialto has been serving pitchers of reasonably priced beer, margaritas, wine and a large dinner menu, all in a dark, comfortable environment.

If you get to the movies early, you can go sit at the bar, or you can head into the cinema and a server will take your order from you. We keep wondering how the Rialto makes any money. The food is not any more expensive than what you’d find in a local restaurant. You can get a huge mug of beer for $10 the first time, and each time you bring it back, they’ll refill it for $5. We guess they make their money on soda. That’s the only expensive thing on the menu.

The best thing about the Rialto is when the movie starts, it actually gets dark inside the cinema. There aren’t any lights underneath the tables, the lights on the walls turn off. If you can’t eat in the dark, you may come out messy, but at least it’s a dark movie experience, which I like. The staff are super stealth. They’re all dressed in black and are very quiet when coming in and out.

We’ve been going to the Rialto for years. It’s close to our house, it’s a super cheap night out for us and we’ve only ever had one disappointing experience, which they fixed. We had gone to see “Australia” and the sound was bad, but when we told them, they gave us free tickets for the next time we came back. It may not be the same yuppy experience that you’ll get at the Alamo Drafthouse, but we like it that way.

For Showtimes and a menu, see the Santikos Rialto Website.

Last night, a group of us went to the Alamo Drafthouse Theater in San Antonio. We all lived on different sides of town and we thought it would be good central location, as well as the fact that it was supposed to be very adult friendly, with no unsupervised kids running around. We were with a Childfree meetup group, so that was also an important consideration. Just an FYI. they have mother and baby day on Tuesday and kids can go the rest of the week, they just have to be supervised by an adult.

Walking in, there was indeed a large selection of beers on tap. We headed straight to the theatre to watch Robin Hood. Under each row, there was menus and a row of lights to read them by. To place your order, you have to put a piece of paper up like a flag for the waiter to see.

Now, I’m going to admit that most of what happens next is probably only going to affect short people. I’m only 4’11″ so it may be unique to us little people. However, the chairs are not comfortable for little people. They’re like racing car seats for extremely tall people. I wasn’t comfortable the entire movie. When I put my “flag” up, I couldn’t see the movie screen. Any time a waiter came to check on us, I couldn’t see the screen.

Now back to normal people. The lights under the bench in front of us never dim. You can’t turn them off. I had a sweater with me that I had to use to cover them, as they were really irritating my husband. One of my tall friends sat with her legs crossed in such a fashion to cover them. But, the light from ALL the lights together kinda lit up the whole room, so it wasn’t a nice dark movie theatre.

Food came out in random order. Granted, there were 8 of us, and we all ordered on separate checks. However, since my husband and I ordered at the same time on the same ticket, you’d think the meals would come out at relatively the same time. No. He got his meal, finished it and then we had to inquire about mine. It came about 20 mins after that. Everyone’s drinks came out sporadically. Which also meant there was a constant procession of wait staff bobbing around in front of us, asking who had ordered what.

We live over by the Rialto theater at 410 and 35 on the NE side. They’ve being doing the dinner movie thing for several years now. I guess a lot of people don’t know it’s there, or they don’t want to go to that side of town. However, I’d say the Rialto is WAY better than the yuppie Alamo Drafthouse.

I won’t be going back to the Alamo Drafthouse. It wasn’t comfortable, the lighting sucked and the constant procession of staff walking through was distracting.

In My Opinion by Manda Lu:
In Boston’s north end, there is a hole in the wall known as the Improv Asylum. I adore this place. It’s “who’s line is it anyways?” meets Saturday Night Live (SNL). The last show I saw was called MBTA-hole, I was doubled over laughing almost constantly. I mean for 20 dollars a ticket and most nights you can get two shows for the price of one, it’s worth the time and money. They are open Wednesday-Saturday. (hint: if you want a Saturday night show, call a few days ahead or you’ll be out of luck.) This is one of the most legit and funniest place around. The picture is from their 80′s prom night that they hosted and I did not win prom queen.
