Last weekend I was in need of another one of my Stone Werks fixes, so I headed over to the Vineyard location. It was nice to get in out of the heat and relax in their upscale dining area.
Today I wanted to give another one of their soups a try. I am in love with their Chicken Poblano Soup but I forced myself to venture on and try something different. So today it was the Chicken Tortilla. This is a spicy chicken soup with tortilla strips, jack cheese, avocado and sour cream. It was a very nice rendition of a San Antonio favorite which wasn’t too spicy. I like spicy but I also want to enjoy the taste of the soup without burning my mouth. This soup fit the bill just right.
My entrée choice of the day was the pulled pork tacos served with a side of beans a la charra and a nice smoky salsa. The tacos were very good fresh tasting corn tortillas filled with a good helping of smoky sweet pulled pork, avocado slices, onions, cilantro and crumbled queso fresco. For those who don’t know, queso fresco is a semi-soft, crumbly white cheese used on many dishes in Mexico. It has a mild, slightly acidic flavor.
My dinner companion chose the pulled pork sandwich which also came with a side of beans a la charra and potato chips. He said he really enjoyed the smoky sweet taste of the pork as well. His sandwich was served on a whole wheat bun. Both the entrees we tried were from the chef’s selection menu choices. I have said before that the chef’s selections are always worth trying because these are dishes the chef has a chance to create from the fresh ingredients he/she has on hand. Kind of an off the menu special that is really on the menu. In my humble opinion, these are almost always a great way to really meet the chef, so to speak. It was definitely true in this instance.
We were not going to have a dessert as we were both pleasantly full; however the people at the table next to us were having a sizzling dessert that smelled fruity with a touch of vanilla and caramel. So we wanted one of those too. (You know the experience of walking into a store and smelling cinnamon and you want whatever is causing that smell. Well, it was that same experience.) We found out the dessert was a warm peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce which comes to the table on a cast iron platter that has the caramel sauce bubbling. What a wonderful and delicious cobbler this turned out to be. I loved the pastry which was light and flakey and the caramel sauce topped it off beautifully. Definitely try one of the cobblers for dessert. They have a different selection daily.
Stone Werks has a nice bar area and they offer happy hour Monday-Friday from 3:00-6:00 pm. You can keep up with all the sports action in high def on any of the big screen TV’s throughout the restaurant and bar. Stone Werks also has outdoor dining areas with fans to help you keep your cool during these hot summer months and they offer late night dining. They will soon be offering Sunday Brunch from 10:00 AM -2:00 PM. Stone Werks has three locations in San Antonio.
