In My Opinion By Bill Archinal:
Bandera Road Cafe in San Antonio, TX – On a recent Friday night my wife and I were trying to find a restaurant that did not require us waiting an hour or more for a table. After several attempts without success we decided to stop by for fast food on the way home. While driving north on Bandera outside Loop 1604 we spotted a new place, actually two new places. HWY 16 Diner and Bandera Road Cafe in a new strip shopping center still being developed. We thought the cafe sounded good so I turned into the parking lot. We had no idea what to expect since the name did not give much of a clue as to what to what would be offered. At this point we were very hungry and would have settled for just about anything.
Upon walking in to Bandera Road Cafe we were greeted with a ‘Please Seat Yourself’ sign. Because the restaurant is so new they were not very busy. Our waitress came to our table immediately and and served us chips and salsa, menus and took our drink order. The menu gave it away that we were in San Antonio’s newest Mexican food establishment. Of course, this being San Antonio, it was probably only the newest for a couple of days. I tend to pass judgment on portion sizes by the price of the meal so I declined when my wife offered to share a meal.
I ordered two enchiladas, one cheese and one chicken. It came with the requisite refried beans and rice.I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the meal. It was more than enough even though I did eat all of it. I usually leave the rice but I decided to at least give it a shot, a little salsa and I finished off the rice which is something I rarely accomplish, mainly because I am not a big fan. My wife had a similar meal and we each had a soft drink, with tip we managed to get out for $21. The price is more than fair for the quantity but the quality is the real winner here. The combination of great taste and low prices makes for superb value.
The atmosphere is laid back, take your time and enjoy your meal. Once the buzz gets going it will be difficult to find a parking spot in the tight parking lot but it will be worth it. I highly recommend Bandera Road Cafe.

I’m in the Helotes are and I’ve been meaning to try this place. I tried the HWY 16 diner, and I have my own review on my website. I’m not crazy about Mexican food, but this review has me intrigued. Who doesn’t love the “more bang for your buck.” concept?! Gotta give this place a try in the near future.
