In My Opinion By Claudia McGuire:
Rock San Sushi & Thai Bistro in San Antonio, TX – There are few restaurants in San Antonio that offer great sushi for an affordable price, along with a customer friendly atmosphere, like Rock San Sushi & Thai Bistro. Rock San is conveniently located at the corner of De Zavala and I-10, this quaint café-style restaurant is sure to provide patrons with a relaxing place to chat with friends, along with a variety of Asian cuisine.
Parking is ample but with a maze of shops surrounding the location it was difficult to spot the restaurant. It would have greatly helped if the sign on the marquee along De Zavala was larger and more eye-catching! It’s not fun playing hide-n-seek with a restaurant when you are eager to sit and have a good meal.
Although mediocre in its appearance, Rock San makes up for this by insuring that customers are well attended to and promptly served. In fact, my husband and I had no problem getting a table during the lunch hour rush, despite the limited wait staff, and it being a Saturday.
Our waiter, Ian, kindly welcomed us to the restaurant and immediately showed us to a table; although the whole process happened so quickly that I was oblivious to fact he was leading us to one table, while I was walking off to another. I was apparently too caught up in the restaurant’s eclectic style to notice my husband calling to me from across the room! Any how, once I found my way to the “correct” table, I focused all my attention on picking the right sushi dish from their long list of specialty rolls.
To my surprise their menu provided two distinct categories of sushi with or without cream cheese! Of course, sushi would not be sushi without cream cheese, so I choose the Eric roll, which contained a perfect balance of fresh smoked salmon, shrimp, avocado, and cream cheese, topped with spicy crab and lightly deep fried. Although, impressed with Rock San’s delectable sushi rolls I wasn’t very satisfied with their ice tea.
I decided to ask the waiter if I could order some green tea, instead, after spotting a tasty sounding mixture of green tea and green apple flavor on the menu. However, we were informed that they no longer served any specialty teas due to their lack of popularity. So, I ordered a glass of regular chilled green tea, hoping it would be a big improvement from their black tea.
While, waiting for my new beverage our waiter, Ian, kindly brought me a glass of water without having to request it! It was nice to know that he took my comfort into consideration, which definitely made the long wait for my green tea more tolerable. Yes, I waited a good 30 minutes for a glass of green tea, but didn’t really feel a minute of it because our waiter periodically assured me that he was working on it.
Later, I came to discover that the poor guy was new to the process of boiling and straining green tea that it posed a bit of a challenge for him. However, when he finally arrived at the table, with tea in hand, I had to admit it was pretty darn good!
My only regret with Rock San was that their rolls weren’t as hearty compared to other restaurants of their caliber. My husband and I plan to go back to Rock San to try their famous fish tacos; hopefully they will live up to their reputation, but that’s material for another review!

I got take out today, Chicken Pad Thai. I was pretty excited to get home and have dinner, however when I opened up the to go box it was only half filled in the container. For $10 for it I was expecting it to be a large quantity, but it wasn’t. It was pretty good I’d go back for it but not at that price.

I think I’ll be going back to visit Rock San Sushi and having the Sean Elliott Roll again. It was pretty good and the price is right.
