In My Opinion By Debi Pfitzenmaier:
OrangeCup in San Antonio, TX – Is orange the new green? OrangeCup brings unique concept to San Antonio. Your first impression of OrangeCup is fresh. The colors are fresh, the logo is fresh, the fruit is very fresh. OrangeCup is all about frozen yogurt. Not just any kind – but good for you frozen yogurt. It proudly carries the seal of the National Yogurt Association, proclaiming its 10 million live and active cultures per gram. So, for those of us who are fans of digestive health, eating yogurt by the gallon and slipping acidophilus tablets on the side, it’s like a siren’s call.
The first thing that hits you when you walk in the door is just how clean the environment is. Light blue, white, orange and pale green greet you. Then you look at the floor. The floor is solid white – which doesn’t exactly go with Texas dirt – leaving a floor sorely in need of a mop. This is the second thing that hits you, and it’s awfully unappetizing.
But I’m a big girl. I can get past that. So up to the counter we go. I must admit – the fruit looks fabulous. We get to choose from three different all-natural yogurts as a base and then add whatever toppings sound good. I picked a züm base – yogurt infused with fresh squeezed orange juice – topped with fresh blueberries in the smallest bowl. I’m psyched. The sign says my yogurt contains 200% of my daily vitamin C. As if to show proof, when my order comes, there’s a personalized nutrition label with my name on it and exactly how many calories I’m eating. Great. I’m pretty sure they would have preferred I noticed the vitamin content. But my eyes keep swinging back over to the 26 grams of sugar. Which is nothing compared to the 63 grams of sugar in my daughter’s choice.
She got a smoothie. Whoops – a blended cup. Don’t get that wrong. The “culturist” behind the counter made it very clear that smoothie is a bad word at OrangeCup.
One sip and I am converted. I’ll call it whatever they want me to call it. It. Is. Awesome. It’s light and tangy – a blend of natural yogurt with strawberries and mango. A small tug of war ensues between us. She wins, but only because she’s nine and that’s what moms have to do. Still, I’m left with blended cup envy because my frozen yogurt is way too sweet. In fact, it tastes just like orange sherbet. Next time – and there will be a next time – I’m going natural.
The best part? When you’ve sucked the last sip from your cup and licked that last drop off your spoon, there’s an area where you can recycle your paper and plastic. Do it, and you get a nickel on the honor system. The nickel machine was empty when we were there, but we still felt good about being offered the option to recycle. It is, after all, a very organic kind of place with an eco-friendly kind of culture. I like that.
Three quick notes:
- Warning: no matter what your mom told you, this frozen yogurt does not taste like ice cream. It’s much more unique than that. If you’ve got kids, you may want to get a taste before you buy.
- Don’t expect to get out cheap. Our bill came to just under $9 for a light-sized bowl and 16 oz cup.
- Check out the company website. I would have finished this review sooner – but I kept getting distracted with a feature on the home page that’s very much like the Doodle Kids app on my iPhone. Addictive.

I love this place! Plus they give you the nutrition break down for your order; and I love knowing something so good isn’t all that bad for you!
