In My Opinion By Evie Barnes:
Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar in Gruene, TX – The Gristmill is a terrific place to eat right after a long float on the river. Anyone near an 8 mile radius from the the town of Gruene will refer all hungry toobers to this delightful resturaunt, Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar.
On a Sunday afternoon, we decided to go to Gristmill for an early dinner, we were expecting a 20-30 minute wait for our party of 10, surprisingly we were seated right away. While we didn’t get a river view the atmosphere was serene. The wait staff at the Gristmill are some of the most hard working restaurant employees—not only do they deal with the demands of the thousands of customers and out-of towners but they also deal with serving in the demanding summer heat. Our glasses were never half empty. Cheers to them.
We started with refreshing pina coladas to cool us off; they made us feel as if we just stepped off a tropical beach in Maui. The Gristmill is known for their wide selection of wine, however, on a hot summer afternoon I would suggest the fresh squeezed lime margarita instead.
Appetizers consisted of the large onion rings—a single order feed a party of 10! The Texas size portions allow you to share with a buddy. Our group tried the full rack of ribs that melted off the bone, the steak salad, which I would have liked to see the salad served with a side of feta cheese, chicken fried steak, and grilled chicken (no feathers).
The ribs as I mentioned melted off the bone, while the sauce didn’t overpower the dish, and the portions were very meaty! The grilled chicken was lightly seasoned and came with a side of mash potatoes and salad. Ah, comfort food. It didn’t make you feel too bad to slip into the swim suit to go for another round on the Comal.
Unless you haven’t ate in days, ran a marathon, or have eyes bigger than your stomach my suggestion is to split an entrée. I split my dinner with a friend and still walked out with a food baby in tow. A favorite place for the tourists and locals. Ask if the river side table is available, the view is a nice added bonus.

This place is the best. My wife and I go here anytime we are near it. The best menu item is the Grist Burger hands down.

I totally agree! The Gristmill is a must try if you find yourself in the New Braunfals area this summer! Their pina coladas are absolutely awesome and their food is mouth watering. Nothing better to fill an empty stomach with after a long ride down the Comal! Well done, Ms. Evie.

Those were some huge Texas size onion rings… so big it wouldn’t fit in the photo
