In My Opinion By Charles Gonzalez:
Acenar Hotmex & Coolbar in San Antonio, TX – So I was looking forward to my first ever visit to Acenar for a few weeks, having booked far in advance as a pre-show dinner. Didn’t really need the reservation at Acenar, because it wasn’t that busy that early (5:30pm). We sat upstairs which was pretty WARM, even when our server told us that the AIR WAS RUNNING?!?! I thought the mojitos were a bit pricey for what we got. Three people tried the regular and the citrus ones. The citrus got higher marks but not by much. We ordered the guacamole for two, which is usually made tableside, but the server told us they usually don’t bring the cart up the second level to make it but he promised they’d make it that way in the kitchen (made it sound like there were two types of guacamole). About 15 minutes later, we saw said cart making it’s way past us to another table. Steak Acenar was good, however the sauce reminded me more of a Ranchero sauce so it was a bit different than what I was expecting. The chocolate mousse dessert was the best part. Unfortunately that’s probably not enough to get me to come back. I don’t mind paying for great food, but I wouldn’t call much of what I ordered great. I was really DISAPPOINTED with Acenar.

I went to Acenar for a friend’s birthday party and hated everything about it except for the salsa that they gave us as we waited for our food. That was the best salsa I’ve ever had in San Antonio to this day (I’m not sure if I got lucky or if it’s standard).

However, the rest of their overpriced food was not worth a cent I paid for it. It was bland and cold by the time I received it. I understand lapses in service when it’s busy, but I will not give second chances on flavor, especially for pricey establishment such as this one.

FYSA I had the green enchiladas.

i’ve gotten bad reviews about Acenar here and from 2 friends, but i’ve only had good experiences the handful of times i’ve been. decent food. great tacos. nice outdoor dining. reasonable service.

@Robert, i get what you are saying about going downtown, but that is the problem with everything there. sometimes i do like to go to the riverwalk and just hang out. (you know, lunch on a day off, date night, etc) in those cases, Acenar is a decent choice.

Wow, who ever sits UPSTAIRS at Acenar? I didnt even know they seated people there, especially not when it isnt crowded. I thought they only used that floor when they have a DJ in the bar. The place to be in any restaurant is on the main floor, or on the outside patio in this case. There are so many wait staff, we have never had any issues with service. I have never had the steak, but it is tex mex, so the fact that the sauce resembled ranchera sauce is not exactly scandalous. The best things I have had there are the oyster appetizer– fried oysters in buttlermilk on yucca chips with grilled pineapple, microgreens, and an tasty sauce. Really tasty and come right away very fresh. Also the duck crepes, which are a sort of brilliant version of enchiladas– they are shredded duck with muchrooms and corn in a crepe, covered in a tamarind/ tomato base sauce with melted cheese. So good, and like nothing you can get anywhere else. The goat was tender and not fatty like it often is. The beans were so much more tasty than I expected. The tres leches is wonderful, has a geat texture that stays firm almost like it has cornmeal in it, despite all the milk it has absorbed, and it is delicious. The tuna margarita is so good, and unlike most places on the riverwalk, it is strong, so worth the money. The blood orange mojito is tasty too.

Wow. I frequent Acenar and I have been fortunate enough not to have a single bad experience. I have always had great food & outstanding service. It appears by these other reviews that I have either been very lucky or these other diners have been unfortunate. As a regular customer I would recommend these commentators giving Acenar another shot. Cheers!

We usually go to the Palm or Bohannan’s before Majestic performances, but opted for something different … Acenar … this past time. We won’t be doing it again.

Inattentive service, LOTS of flies, sub-par margaritas, stale chips and basic-at-best entrees are not the things that make guests return. It was Taco Cabana, for about $60 more. And TC would actually trump Acenar … for better service!

    Just say no to Acenar.

@Charles – I guess they should change their name to Acenar HotPlace? If it was really uncomfortably hot and after the server says they don’t do tableside guacamole, then seeing another server that did?!?! I may have told the manager or left? That is really bad service, shows the server was just too lazy.

There are only 2 things I like at Acenar, which are the shrimp tacos & the half rotisserie chicken plate. That’s it and both those dishes are around the average quality range.

There’s nothing at Acenar that makes me want to drive downtown and have dinner there. Sorry, but there’s not. Its asking a lot from people these days to make a long drive downtown, try to find parking that’s close, and get the service you did… no way I’m not going.
