In My Opinion By Maureen Fusco:
Paciugo Gelato in San Antonio, TX – Many times, an unexpected detour can lead you into a delightful indulgence. Such was the case with our visit to Paciugo Gelato. We (husband, son and me) had been to a tweet-up. The day was beautiful and no one had much else to do. We aimed the X-Terra north, jumped on Loop 410, and hip-hopped our way to The Village-Stone Oak shopping complex. Tucked within interesting architectural groups, built to resemble a hilly European village, we spotted Paciugo Gelato.
Just a small space, indeed, Paciugo Gelato does not require a grand vestibule or expansive dining experience. Its forte is handmade, healthy gelati, sorbetti and a selection of superior coffees. Healthy is nice, but flavor and that ‘oh, yum-um’ sort of pucker one gets when taste buds wake up is what I’m talking about. Paciugo’s really delivers on flavor selection, too. Fresh, premium ingredients create truly delicious gelati and sorbetti. While hubby picked two choices of chocolate, I had a trifecta of chocolate chocolate chip, pistachio and amaretto. My son pronounced his choice of Smores, black raspberry and Italian trifle to be the perfect combination. Whatever!
Then there’s the coffee. Gran Miscela Caffe gives you an assortment of coffee choices. So, you want light? How about dark? Or, maybe you want a full-bodied Vienna roast? What about espresso and decaf? Find your choice. Gran Miscela uses coffee beans from Africa, East Asia, and the Americas. Manager, Zech Angulo, led us through the selection process and happily informed us that Paciugo Gelato will be opening a third San Antonio store at La Cantera. There is another in Lincoln Heights.
Once we settled on what to have, we headed for their outdoor terrace. A genuine feeling of being in the midst of a quaint European Village gave us much pleasure and hubby and I reminisced about our long-ago trip to Italy. Overlooking beautiful foliage and a bubbling brook, the terrace view is the best spot in the entire complex. Peace and pleasure reigned. The product is authentic. The founder, Ugo Ginatta, along with his wife and son, left Turin, Italy in 2000. The first gelato caffe opened in Dallas, TX. Our entire experience was very pleasant. I highly recommend Paciugo Italian Gelato at whichever location you choose.

Da Vinci is growing on me. I just came back from three years in Italy. While I’m glad to see gelato taking off here in the States, I’m still suffering from sticker shock. Paying $3/scoop for what I’d used to pay < $1/scoop is killing me.
As far as Da Vinci goes, the quality is excellent. I wish they offered MORE traditional Italian flavors than gelato-ized American ones.
Still, its hard to beat a scoop of Limone on a hot afternoon.

Hi Chris, I’m a big fan of Da Vinci Gelato & Caffe, they have some really great Italian Ice Cream! I hope to be able to do a review on them soon and also try Paciugo Gelato. Thus, to have a side by side comparison for you. Da Vinci really needs to updates its website, rather than having huge images that link to other pages and also are the coupons still good, even if it says it expires 12-31-07?
