In My Opinion By Henry Halff:
The Cove in San Antonio, TX is located on W. Cypress in the Five Points neighborhood. I first heard about The Cove on Twitter and drove down with my wife on a recent Friday night to give this place a try. Here’s what The Cove has to offer:
- serves only free-range chicken, pasture fed meat, organic vegetables and fish tacos,
- takes orders over a lunch counter and cooks to order,
- has a beer list that is longer than its food menu, and a food menu longer than its wine list,
- has a playground in back of a spacious beer garden,
- is conveniently co-located with a laundromat and carwash,
- is popular with families, hippies, and party people,
- features live music with a Texas twang and,
- hosts beer and wine tastings monthly!
My wife tried the children’s menu and ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, which she says was “perfect.” I had a “Lamb Burger with Latin Spices & Cotija Cheese. Pasture raised by Loncito, Texas Coastal Plains.” I don’t think that I’ve ever had anything as good between two slices of bread. The spices were bold enough to lend character to the dish but did not overpower the lamb itself. In an upscale restaurant such a sandwich would have cost $20. It can be had at the Cove for $9.
For a beer nut like me, The Cove’s bar was one of the best in town. There are no taps, but a cooler behind the bar displays a raft of good beer, including the best Texas and domestic craft beers and a fair number of imports. The folks behind the bar know and love beer as well.
Entertainment was provided by the passel of kids, dancers, and other diners and by a couple of cover bands: a family band known as The Lavens, and a folk-rock group that call themselves The Standouts. Both bands were good. Both had some great original numbers. Check out The Cove’s website for upcoming music acts.
The Cove offers much that we didn’t get to try. We did not have their signature fish tacos. We did not bring our laundry or wash our car. And I still have about 98 beers to work my way through. We’re looking forward to coming back again and again.
One last note, is the parking lot at The Cove is miniscule. You may have to park on the street, but don’t let that stop you.

I finally got to eat at The Cove a few days ago. I decided to play it safe and order the Texas Burger which came with a side of sweet potato fries.
The burger was okay. In all honesty, there was something that kept throwing me off with its flavor– kind of like a sweet undertone to the burger– that I did not enjoy at all. I even tried putting pepper on the burger to get rid of it, but nothing worked. The fries were okay, too. A couple of them were still raw, though.
The soda, which is made out of sugar cane, I’m guessing, was also strange to my palate. I got what I assumed would taste like Mexican Coca-Cola (since it’s also made w/cane sugar) and turned out tasting like a melted Coke Icee.
It was too much for me. I don’t think I’d go back except for the entertainment and a couple of beers.

Ok, checking in again after another fantastic experience at The Cove…
Just had to weigh in: I have heard nothing but fantastic things about their fish tacos and their shrimp tacos… so, today, when a co-worker suggested we get take-out from The Cove, I jumped on the chance to try something new (I have a habit of always getting a burger with a side of Sweet Potato Fries & that addictive dipping sauce).
Lunch of choice: the Seafood platter, which includes 1 fish taco, 1 shrimp taco and a small baby spinich salad. I was not disappointed – delicious! There was a little somethin’ spicy in the tacos – which were garnished with a yummy slaw salad concoction – and the salad dressing, with a hint of mustard, was great, without being heavy.
I will admit, I’ll probably go back to the tried and the true burgers at The Cove, but it’s good to know I have another seafood choice for Fridays of Lent!!!

I cannot agree more with the review – The Cove is outstanding! On my first visit there, I enjoyed the 09′er Burger – delish!!! Second time around, I went for the Bella Burger – so good! As a longtime fan of Chris Madrid’s, it takes a lot for me to find a better burger than the cheesy macho, but I think The Cove may have done it!

You know, the Cove was on the Food Network show called Diner’s Drive-In’s & Dives recently with Guy Fieri. He tried that Lamb Burger and fell in love with it. Definitely one of the places on the top of his list. Ever since then I’ve been dying to go try this place, I need to visit the Cove soon!
